Mary Jane Uttley was the fifth child of Samuel Uttley and Mary Baxter Taylor. She was given the same name as a daughter born in 1863 of Samuel's brother Nathan. Her given name 'Mary' would have been for her mother and the middle name of 'Jane' for her mother's sister Jane Taylor Christman.Birth
Her birth is recorded in the Ontario Birth Archive of 1872, reference #021-606:When: 11 November 1872 Place: Woolwich Name: Mary Jane female Father: Samuel Utley [sic] Occ: Fireman Mother: Mary B. Tailor [sic] Informant: Samuel Uttley, Fireman, Elmira Registered: 26 December 1872 Accoucher: Mrs. Isaac WengerShe was baptized as a Wesleyan Methodist on January 24, 1873 where full name is given as Mary Minerva Jane Uttley and her birth date is given a month earlier on October 12, 1872.The Census of 1881 lists Mary Jane, age 8, living with the family in Peel Twp, Wellington Co. In 1891 at age 18, Mary is still living at home in Doon but by the next census she is married and moved away.
Marriage
The Ontario Marriage Archive contains a record of Mary Jane's marriage to Harry Parr in 1894, reference #012-073:groom: Henry Allen Parr age: 26 res: Troy, N.Y. born: Glenville, Ireland bachelor occ: Dyer parents: Henry Parr / Susan Greydon rel: Methodist bride: Mary Jane Uttley age: 22 res: Doon born: Elmira spinster parents: Samuel Uttley / Mary Taylor rel: Presbyterian witnesses: Anna Uttley, Doon John Linder, Galt when: Dec 24th 1894, Doon
- The witness 'Anna Uttley' would have been Mary Jane's older sister Agnes Ann (Annie).
- John Linder was a half-brother to Matilda Uttley (nee Linder), wife of Jonathan Uttley. Is this the same person? A look in the 1901 Census data for Galt may shed some light?
The marriage record says that Harry Parr lived in Troy, New York and the couple probably lived in the United States from the beginning of their marriage. The United States Federal census in 1900 shows the couple living in Norwalk, Connecticut and in 1910 they had moved to North Kingstown, Rhode Island. When Mary's mother dies in 1915, one of her obituaries says Mrs. Mary Parr lived in Connecticut and another obit says Pascoag, Rhode Island.
Henry A. Parr died in Rhode Island in 1918 leaving his wife with at least four children at home. The United States Federal census two years later in 1920 shows Mary as a widow living in Providence, Rhode Island. When her father Samuel dies in 1921 the Parrs are still living in Providence, Rhode Island but the census of 1930 shows Mary has moved to Detroit, Nichigan. After 1935 the obituaries of four of Mary's siblings say that Mrs. Mary Parr continued to live in Detroit, Michigan which is where she died.
Deaths
Henry Allen Parr died in Rhode Island on April 18, 1918 at age 49 years. His parents, Henry and Susan Parr were listed as his kin rather than Mary.Mary Jane died in Detroit, Michigan in March 1953. She is buried in Beverly Hills, Michigan alongside others in the Parr family. A brief notice in the K-W Record of Thursday March 26, 1953 on page 7 reads:
Mrs. Harry Parr By Record Correspondent DOON -- Word has been received here of the death of Mrs. Harry Parr, Detroit. She was the former Minerva Uttley, daughter of the late Mrs. and Mrs. Samuel Uttley. The late William Uttley was a brother.
- This is the first reference to Minerva as a name for Mary Jane.
